Project: ’Beach sport centre’-Berlin,
Wall paintings & advertising illustrations
on inner and outside walls

In spring 2002, 3 students from
Berlin, Erik Deutschmann, Stephan Eckardt
and Olaf König, began building a beach sports
hall, similar to one that is located in Witten-Heven (Indoor
Beachsport Centre Witten).

After having gained from some
experience in an outdoor venue, they wanted to build their own centre.
They had looked at the hall and studied the concept of the centre
in Witten with the support of its manager Patrick Temmermann
and were impressed by the wall paintings produced by smartart
which contributes considerably to the atmosphere of the centre.
|
|
| |
To be on the safe side they contracted
the artists from Dortmund. Like in Witten, the long interior wall
was to be designed with a South Sea look for the players to look
at.

We had to work to a tight schedule as the sand was being delivered
to the centre three weeks after work began which would have made
it impossible to move around with the available equipment.
While we were working, it was decided to spray the logo on the outside
top wall. They also wanted the wording ‘Indoor Beachsport
Centre’ applied to the long outside wall. Shortly after the
centre was opened, the first companies showed interest in renting
wall space for advertising.
All these sponsors wanted their advertising to be integrated into
the existing wall paintings. This way, everybody was satisfied.
The picture was not disturbed by advertising, but rather the advertising
fitted into the picture and was well received.

The first sponsors were the sports centre supplier ’Erhardt
Sport’, the mineral water company ’Spreequell’
from Berlin and the radio channel ’Radio Eins’
from Berlin.

The working conditions had changed as the sports centre had opened.
Therefore, we couldn’t work at peak hours and some night shifts
were necessary. An additional challenge was moving the hydraulic
ramp around in the sand.
This problem was soon solved using some sturdy boards. The managers
still found more areas of wall that they wanted to beautify. So
far, we had mainly worked on the inside wall and now we started
working outside. Here was a strand bar which needed the bare walls
covering up.

The next step was the sauna. Our next task was a special party room
for events. The landscaping continued here with the same theme.
